Experimenting and Ideas

Sketches of stuff in sketch book, relate his work to mine
In my Blacksmith's work he created a lot of 'dark' sculptures. I decided to take his work and re-create it with my own style of illustration. I showed him some of my sketches and he liked the general direction I was headed with his zine.
He liked the idea of using his projects and me re creating them using illustration.

For this idea I wanted to re-create one of the works of Mucha, A. as well as re-creating one of my Blacksmith's old projects and combining them into one illustration. I took the idea of using one of my Blacksmith's project, he had a project where he created a tree with an eye, I also took Mucha's art of using women with long swirling detailed works and combined the two. My illustration is of a women sitting on a tree that has significant detail (this was only a rough so I didn't put much detail into the rough idea, in the final one it would've had much more detail) with a women sitting on one of the branches holding an eye. The reason I chose not to go forward with this idea because the design was too complicated and didn't have much understanding towards Blacksmith's in general. I thought the idea of it was good, but wouldn't have made much sense to my audience or my Blacksmith's audience.

This illustration was the same idea of taking one of my Blacksmith's old projects. For this he mentioned he like elegant things, I felt a rose would fit perfectly for his suggestion. Within the middle of the rose is an eye, this was placed in the flower to combine my Blacksmith's interests with one of his old projects.
I did not take this idea forward because again, I felt it didn't fit in with the brief or the message I was trying to get across within my zine/story of my Blacksmith.

The idea of this illustration came from what tools Blacksmiths use on a daily basis, even though my Blacksmith uses tools to melt things quite frequently I decided to create something that was obvious. Merging what blacksmiths use with their interests combined into one illustration. That's something I wanted to use a lot within this project. I decided not to use this illustration because I felt it was a little bit irrelevant looking back on what tools my Blacksmith uses, rater than looking at what all Blacksmiths use.

Original Version                                                       Inverted Version of the Hammer with Bone Wings
Works more effectively because of the acquired taste my Blacksmith has.

I thought that this would be a good idea to inter-link with my blacksmith because this relates to some of his old work as well as my twist of illustration on. I felt the design worked effectively because it includes illustration as well as blacksmithing.
This would be a design I take forward into my final design because of how it can easily relate to my blacksmith.

I created a skeleton spider because of my Blacksmith's interests towards 'dark art.'
I decided not to take this forward because I felt it didn't fit in with the brief given to us, it represents his interests but not his work as a blacksmith.

When my Blacksmith mentioned that he likes dark art, I felt like a dark rose would be appropriate for this kind of style. I chose not to use this design because again it fitted in with my blacksmith's interests but didn't fit the project brief that was given to use. Although my blacksmith uses a lot of equipment to melt his projects, I wasn't sure whether to use this design or not. I have thought about using this as part of the zine that if I was to do it again I would use this design, but again I'm not certain. I feel this might work effectively as a separate project that if I were to re-do my blacksmith's zine I would use this design purely because it links in with his style.
